COOLING SYSTEM & RADIATOR EXPLAINED

A typical automotive cooling system consists of:

 

• Series of galleries cast into the engine block and cylinder head, surrounding the combustion chambers with circulating liquid to carry away heat

• Radiator, consisting of many small tubes equipped with a honeycomb of fins to dissipate heat rapidly, that receives and cools hot liquid from the engine

• Water pump, usually of the centrifugal type, to circulate the coolant through the system

• Thermostat to control temperature by varying the amount of coolant going to the radiator

• Fan to draw cool air through the radiator

 

The radiator transfers the heat from the fluid inside to the air outside, thereby cooling the fluid, which in turn cools the engine. Radiators are also often used to cool automatic transmission fluids, air conditioner refrigerant, intake air, and sometimes to cool motor oil or power steering fluid.

Coolant/Antifreeze Flush or Drain

 

The first step in conducting a cooling system service is removing the old coolant/water mixture. This is necessary because after many miles of use it can become contaminated with particles that are damaging to the system and the engine. Simply draining the fluid from the radiator can result in as much as 60 percent of the original fluid being left in the engine. Special methods are utilized to ensure that all of the old fluid is removed.

 

Coolant/Antifreeze Refill

Once any replacement parts are installed the system will be refilled with the proper antifreeze/water mixture, allowing you to get back on the road without having to worry about overheating.

 

Thermostat Check & Replacement

 

If the vehicle has high mileage it may be suggested that the thermostat be replaced. This is because an aging thermostat is more likely to fail, which could result in an instance of overheating.

 

Cooling Fan

 

Your cooling fan is responsible for pumping air throughout the radiator so it can release hot engine heat into the surrounding air. If your fan ever malfunctions or stops, your engine can quickly overheat, resulting in serious engine problems. At Honest1, we will inspect your cooling fan to make sure the drive belt or fan belt is working properly and isn’t loose or cracked.

 

Pressure Cap

 

The pressure cap also known as the radiator cap is located on the radiator or coolant reservoir. Your pressure cap should be checked at least once a year for cracks and should be performed by a trained mechanic.

 

Radiator 

 

Your radiator’s job is to keep coolant flowing throughout your engine. If you ever encounter a block or a leak, your engine can quickly overheat and cause your car to break down. The best way to prevent any block or leak is to regularly check your cooling system and radiator. Your radiator is made out of a thin and easily penetrable mental, that is very sustainable to leaks and corrosion. Maintaining your radiator regularly can mean catching cracks, holes, and corrosion before it becomes a serious problem.
